The AFL Reaction Time test is a test of eye-hand coordination and reaction time in which the players are required to hit a board as many times as they can in 30 seconds. This test is part of the protocol for the annual AFL Combine.
- purpose: to measure reaction time in sports players
- equipment required: a specially developed Australian made timer provided by SVT, which is composed of a grid of 32 lights aligned in 4 rows of 8.
- procedure: For the AFL test, the athlete is required to hit a series of random lights as fast as they can, and as many times as they can, in 30 seconds, and the SVT measures their reaction time. The software used with the board has preset programs so you can design any sequence of lights to appear. E.g. if you are testing a boxer you can design 3 lights to mimic a "Jab, Jab then a hook", but for a soccer goalkeeper you can program peripheral lights only.
- scoring: The score recorded is the number of touches in 30 seconds (as used by the AFL).
- disadvantages: the testing apparatus needs to be purchased
- target population: this test was designed specifically for Australian Rules football players, but is also used in other sports.
- comments: there is also a 80 light timer available from SVT
